Over time, the lips lose their form and become thinner. The most obvious is the vertical wrinkles and the red part of the lip blends into the skin due to loss of form.

The youthful lip is plump and has a raised border where it meets the skin. This forms the “white roll” of the lip, which is caused by the reflection of light. Also, there is a slight increase in mass in the mid portion of the upper lip to create a slight pout. The two vertical ridges leading from the mid upper lip to the nasal areas are sometimes lost with aging.

Soft tissue fillers, such as Restylane, Perlane, and Juvaderm can restore the youthful anatomy. This is usually performed under local anesthesia in the office with very little downtime.

These soft tissue fillers (Restylane, Perlane, and Juvaderm) are FDA approved products, which are non-animal hyaluronic acid gels. Hyaluronic acid is a natural occurring product in our body which helps hold tissue together.

Soft tissue fillers are used to:

  • Correct scars
  • Treat deep folds
  • Smooth out wrinkles
  • Fill out depressions or defects
  • Fill out the tear troughs under the eyes

These soft tissue fillers work by absorbing water and boosting the skin’s hydration system to lift and smooth wrinkles or deep folds. They also stimulate collagen formation. The final result is natural fullness and enhanced contour which lasts a year or longer, depending on the product, amount used, and placement site.

The use of dermal fillers and Botox are the #1 and #2 top cosmetic procedures performed in the United States, and together they do a magnificent job in restoring the youthful face.
